大好きな表現

今、私の大好きな洋書の日本語版を読んでいます。やっと、原文で一番覚えている部分まで読み終えました：

『船が空中に浮かんでいるさまは、レンガが絶対に浮かばないさまにそっくりだった。』

詩的ではないですか？

誰か、本の名前が分かりますか？

1. That’s an easy one: hitchhikers, talking about Vogan constructor ships.
   But what does the “さま” after a verb form mean? I don’t think I’ve seen that before.

2. Wow, somehow I never got the notification for this comment, so I didn’t notice it until now.  sama is 様 just like ダレン様but the usage in this case is closer to ミスしない様に

   Just an interesting side note, do you know why we use that kanji as a polite way of addressing someone?  Apparently that is kind of like talking about the idea of them rather than talking about them directly.  This layer of abstraction equals a layer of politeness.  I’m not worthy to even speak about you directlyみたいな感じかな。
