Outstanding Design
One of us today stumbled upon The Web Standards Awards, and was greatly impressed with a couple of the awardees.
Wildly Sophisticated Media is a beautifully slick and eye-catching site with great use of photographs. We particularly like the links to their three feature sections. They are big and bold, and we would have sworn that they were completely made up of images. We were surprised to find that the little summary section in each one was text, something that makes the site just that much lighter and quick to load. We really have only one complaint, and that is that a lot of users may find the summary text too small to be easily readable. When you increase the font size in your browser however the text flows out of the button and is partially hidden from view.
City Sound is a simple yet visually arresting site, which makes brilliant use of the small number of images that they use. On the whole page I count three images and the flash banner at the top which is beautifully understated. The page loads in about a second here, and should load in less than 10 seconds even on a 28.8K modem.
We’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the designers who made those sites, and thank them for the inspiration.
